Island News is published by Island Press, a division of Hearst Magazines, Inc. The first issue appeared on November. 24, 1931. The title was changed to the Stroller’s Weekly. It was later renamed to the Island News Professional and Douglas Island News. H. B. Selby & E. S. Stevens edited the issue. The name was not last used until March 3, 1933 when the last edition was published.
Island News Professional brought several new writers to Alaska to write stories about business in the islands and the surrounding regions. The pages also featured news and travel columns and a sports section that was newly added as well as a mining report, an article on the Kenai Fjords National Park, an island weather report, a brand new feature on the Kenai Wildlife Park, a cultural calendar and a wildlife report and mining reports. Island News Professional was primarily an online magazine, but it also featured pages for businesses. They were split into two sections: the Commercial Business section, which dealt with business owners and their businesses; and the Employment and Training section, which was created to keep people informed about local job openings. The section for businesses was intended to offer job opening details and advertisements. The employment section included ads for classifieds for every kind of job available, such as construction, fishing, general contracting,, landscaping or any other type of trade. There are also the listings of employers seeking workers as well as a directory of phone numbers with the names and numbers of companies.
Island News Digest published the Kenai Peninsula News, a publication that featured local content. It was primarily focused on the Kenai Peninsula, and covered everything from travel and tourism to arts and culture. Contrary to the Peninsula News, which was mostly business oriented it was the Kenai Digest was entirely designed to be a service that was aimed at consumers. It featured articles on education, family activities, sports, culture, and local government.
Other subjects included education, culture, religion and labor as well as technology, business owners and radio and television production. There was a lot of news about the Peninsula and Kenai Peninsula. Many people were pleased to have a reliable and objective source of business news.
